Is Your Bunny Due for the RHDV2 Vaccine?

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 - or RHDV2 - is a highly contagious viral disease that can infect both wild and domesticated rabbits.

It can be transmitted directly but also indirectly - like by insects, on pets that go outside, on your clothing and shoes, and on foraged greens and twigs - so it is recommended that all pet rabbits get the vaccine even if they never spend time outdoors.

It sounds scary but many exotic veterinarians in the United States have the USDA-licensed Medgene vaccine available and it is pretty quick and easy for them to administer after performing an exam on your bunny. Some exotic vets will even let you stay right by your bunny's side while they get their vaccine.

Lu and Stu just got their annual booster at Narra Veterinary Clinic in Tigard, Oregon and they were champs - they didn't even flinch! They were definitely less annoyed by the shot than by getting their temp taken or their ear, eye or teeth exam πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

If you recently went to the vet but your bunny hasn't been vaccinated, many rescues across the nation - like Rabbit Advocates in our neck of the woods - offer regular low-cost RHDV2 clinics. Check with your local rabbit rescue about eligibility; some vaccine events are just for the initial 2-dose regimen or the annual booster and there may be state restrictions - like only being able to sign up for a clinic being held in the state you reside in.

If it's been 9+ months since your rabbit was vaccinated or got their last booster, it's a good time to call your vet to schedule an appointment. It is recommended for them to get boosted annually but you do not need to wait the full 12 months before getting them boosted.
